Liuhe is Kaohsiung’s front door — but the front door is rarely where locals eat. Here are both routes, so next time you can browse this street on the local channel.
Two routes, two exits
The tourist channel starts at Formosa Boulevard exit 11 and runs straight down the main drag, collecting queues. The local channel cuts in from Liuhe 1st Road or Zili 2nd Road, circling the outer ring first — the old stalls sit off-center with faded signs and decades-calibrated woks.
The base order and the add-ons
Seafood congee, salt-steamed shrimp, papaya milk — take all three on a first visit. Local add-ons: charcoal-grilled tempura, tube rice cake, fresh-cut fruit. Skip stall names; follow local accents and fast table turnover. After nine-thirty the crowd thins and fresh orders come out unqueued.
After the market
Liuhe folds around midnight, but Xinxing stays up. Ten minutes on foot reaches the bar circle — Yorozu Izakaya on Zhongshan 1st Road holds two thousand reviews, and Iron Planet Dining & Bar mixes industrial styling with cocktails. Teetotal night? Stroll Xinjuejiang, then end at the Dome of Light.
If drinks joined dinner, leave the scooter — taxis and designated drivers are everywhere around Liuhe. Full district plans live in the Xinxing guide.
